Description (see definition): A high and completely ice-covered island about 200 mi long and 85 mi wide. This large feature rises to 975 m and separates Ronne Ice Shelf from Filchner Ice Shelf. Discovered by members of the US-IGY party at Ellsworth Station, under the leadership of Captain Finn Ronne, U.S. Navy Reserve (USNR), during the 1957-58 season. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for American physicist Lloyd V. Berkner, engineer with the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, 1928-30.
