Pass extending in an E-W direction between Rouen Mountains and Elgar Uplands in the N part of Alexander Island. First seen from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) in 1937. Remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947-48, by Searle of the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) for Tufts University, Medford, MA, where Dr. Robert Nichols was head of the geology department before joining the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE).
