Surveyed by British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1968-71. In association with the names of pioneers of polar life and travel grouped in this area, named in 1971 by the UK Antarctic Place-names Committee (UK-APC) after Sir James Dewar (1842-1923), Scottish chemist and physicist who invented the thermos flask, c. 1892.
