Probably first seen by the British sealing expedition under Weddell, who examined the N coast of Laurie Island in 1823. Charted in 1903 by the ScotNAE under Bruce, who named it for Mrs. J.H. Harvey Pirie, wife of the surgeon-geologist to the expedition.
