A small horseshoe-shaped island which has numerous areas of exposed rock, lying 7 mi north of the northwest end of Siple Island, off the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Discovered and photographed from aircraft of U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Highjump, 1946-47. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Eugene Maher, USN, Commanding Officer of USS Glacier during Operation Deep Freeze, 1955-56.
