Glacier 9 mi long, flowing E into Whirlwind Inlet between Demorest and Chamberlin Glaciers, on the E coast of Graham Land. Discovered by Sir Hubert Wilkins on a flight of Dec. 20, 1928, and photographed from the air by the U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS) in 1940. Charted by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1947 and named for Francois E. Matthes, glaciologist, then chief geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
