Description
(see definition):
Small island lying 1 mi WNW of the N tip of Smith Island, in the South Shetland Islands. The name Barlow, presumably for Peter Barlow, British physicist and mathematician, was applied to a cape on the E side of Smith Island by a British expedition under Foster, 1828-31. In 1951-52, the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) determined that no significant cape exists on the E side of the island, but for the sake of historical continuity applied the name to the island described above.
