Discovered by a German expedition 1873-74, under Dallmann, but its relationship to Anvers Island was not known at that time. It was later charted by the French Antarctic Expedition (FrAE), 1903-05, under Charcot, and named by him for prince Albert de Monaco, a patron of the expedition.
