Description

A deeply indented, ice-covered peninsula, 60 mi long in a NE-SW direction and 60 mi wide at its broadest part, forming the SW part of Alexander Island. First seen and photographed from the air in 1940 by U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS), which compiled the first rough map of SW Alexander Island. Resighted and photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947-48, and remapped from Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) photos by Searle of Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by UK Antarctic Place-names Committee (UK-APC) after Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), German composer.
