Delineated from aerial photographs taken by U.S. Navy (USN) OpHjp, 1946-47. An astronomical control station was established on the rock by U.S. Navy (USN) OpWml, 1947-48. Named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Tech. Sergeant George H. Bigelow, U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), tractor driver-mechanic with U.S. Navy (USN) OpHjp and U.S. Navy (USN) OpWml.
