Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) at the suggestion of Arthur B. Ford for Gunars Abele, civil engineer on the 1973-74 U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) - Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) survey in this area.
