Glacier 2 mi wide at its mouth, which flows ESE to the W side of Violante Inlet, on the E coast of Palmer Land. Discovered and photographed from the air in December 1940 by the U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS). During 1947 the glacier was photographed from the air by members of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), who in conjunction with the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) charted it from the ground. Named by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) for Prof. Albert Defant, German oceanographer (Austrian born) who was Director of the Inst. fur Meereskunde (German Hydrographic Office), 1927-46.
