An ice-topped, wedge-shaped plateau, about 20 mi long, standing just N of Patuxent Ice Stream in the Patuxent Range, Pensacola Mountains. Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy (USN) air photos, 1956-66. Named for J. Hoover Mackin, professor of geology at the University of Washington, at Seattle. The name was suggested by U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) geologists who investigated the Pensacola Mountains, several having been students under Mackin.
