Description

A small rocky island lying close to the coast of Antarctica, 13 mi WNW of Cape Nutt. Mapped (1955) by G.D. Blodgett from air photos taken by U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Highjump (1947). Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Everett L. Merritt, photogrammetrist, Navy Hydrographic Office, who served as surveyor with U.S. Navy (USN) Operation Windmill parties which established astronomical control stations along Wilhelm II, Knox, and Budd Coasts (1948).
