Krakatoa, also known as Krakatau, exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, with some estimates much higher.
A series of four huge explosions, which nearly destroyed Krakatau island, were so violent that they were heard 3,500 kilometers away in Perth, Western Australia and on the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, 4,800 kilometers away.
It is ranked among the most violent explosions in history on Smithsonian's Volcanic Explocivity Index.
